ABOUT

About

I’m a Counselling Psychologist with 22 years of clinical experience.

As an English person, I bring a broad perspective shaped by my experiences of living and working across the UK and Ireland. I began my career as a psychologist in Northern Ireland, where I worked in community and clinical settings, supporting adults experiencing a wide range of personal and psychological difficulties. Over the years, I developed extensive experience working with trauma, PTSD, grief, interpersonal difficulties and the challenges associated with demanding or frontline occupations.

I moved to Nova Scotia in October 2015 and have been practising privately as a Counselling Psychologist in Canada since January 2016.

My clinical experience and training have continued to develop throughout my career, with a particular focus on trauma treatment. I am EMDRIA-certified having specialized in EMDR since 2010, and I have also completed training in Attachment-Focused EMDR, the FLASH technique and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART).

THERAPY

Therapy

Therapy: A Collaborative and Individualized Approach

Therapy isn't one-size-fits-all. It is most helpful when you feel safe, respected and genuinely understood.

My approach is welcoming, collaborative and flexible. I draw on a range of evidence-informed approaches and tailor therapy to your individual circumstances, goals and readiness.

I aim to provide a calm, open space where you can explore your experiences, build self-awareness and work toward the changes that matter to you. My role is not to tell you what you should do. Instead, we’ll work together to understand what’s happening, identify your goals and find an approach that feels right for you.

I work with adults experiencing a wide range of concerns and recognize that everyone brings their own experiences, strengths and challenges to therapy. My goal is to create a space where you can feel comfortable being yourself and make meaningful changes at your own pace.

Depending on your needs and goals, therapy may focus on understanding current challenges, developing coping strategies, strengthening self-awareness and relationships, or processing experiences that continue to affect you.

Trauma and PTSD

Trauma can continue to affect us long after an experience has ended. It can influence our sense of safety, relationships, emotions, self-confidence and ability to cope with everyday situations.

My trauma-focused work includes:

  • EMDR

  • Attachment-Focused EMDR

  • FLASH Technique

  • Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

Trauma treatment is approached thoughtfully and at a pace that respects your individual readiness. Stabilization and developing effective coping strategies may be an important part of the process before trauma processing begins.

For more information on EMDR please see the following link (link opens in a new tab): What is EMDR Therapy?

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Anxiety and emotional stress

  • Complicated and traumatic grief

  • Grief and loss

  • Interpersonal difficulties

  • Self-esteem

  • Coping and adjustment

  • Major life transitions

I also have extensive experience supporting veterans, first responders, Police/RCMP and their family members.

Therapeutic Approaches

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a trauma-focused approach that can help people process distressing experiences and reduce the impact these experiences continue to have.

Attachment-Focused EMDR

Attachment-Focused EMDR incorporates an understanding of attachment and relationship experiences into trauma-focused treatment. This can be particularly helpful when earlier experiences have influenced how you relate to yourself or others.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

ART is a trauma-focused therapeutic approach that can help people process distressing memories and experiences while reducing their emotional impact.

FLASH Technique

FLASH is a brief trauma-focused technique that may be incorporated into treatment when appropriate.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT can help with emotional and interpersonal stressors, coping, decision-making and moving toward the things that matter to you.

Integrative Therapy

I also draw from person-centred, attachment-based, interpersonal, emotion-focused and solution-focused approaches.

The goal is not to fit you into a particular therapy model. The goal is to find an approach that fits you.

An Important Note About The Services I Provide

My practice focuses on psychological counselling and psychotherapy for adults who are able to engage in therapy and are looking to work collaboratively toward positive change.

I do not provide psychological or diagnostic assessments, and I do not typically complete extensive reports or documentation. My practice may not be the best fit for individuals who require a higher level of support or significant assistance with day-to-day functioning.

If you’re unsure whether my practice is a good fit for your needs, you’re welcome to reach out and briefly share what you’re looking for. This can help us determine whether a consultation call would be appropriate and whether my services may be a good fit for your needs

Individual sessions are $225 per 50-minute session, with an additional 10 minutes allocated for clinical documentation.

Payment is collected at the end of each session. Registered Psychologists are not covered by Nova Scotia's Medical Services Insurance (MSI). However, many extended health plans provide coverage for psychological services. Please check directly with your insurance provider regarding your coverage.

Cancellation and Rescheduling

Please provide a minimum of 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment. This allows an opportunity for another client to be booked into the time reserved for you. As much advance notice as possible is always appreciated and preferred

Appointments cancelled or rescheduled with less than 24 hours’ notice, as well as missed appointments (no-shows), are charged the full session fee. Notice is calculated using business days, Monday to Friday; therefore, Monday appointments must be cancelled or rescheduled before 12:00 noon on the preceding Friday. For appointments following a holiday, notice must be provided before 12:00 noon on the last business day before the holiday.

As telephone and video appointments are available, this policy continues to apply in unexpected circumstances, including illness, bad weather, car problems, work commitments, childcare issues, or other unexpected events.

Please note that most insurance companies do not cover missed appointments or late cancellations. The full fee remains the client’s responsibility.
